Local action gets results
Dozens of community and labour activists showed that local actions can have significant results when they shamed the Chicago Mercantile Exchange into giving back $15 million in “tax increment financing.”
Stand Up! Chicago delivered a golden toilet to the CME Group – owner of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange – to protest the millions in corporate welfare handed to the global options-trading giant.
Fair taxes, an end to corporate tax shelters and loopholes, and a financial transactions tax are key elements of the fight for quality public services and healthy communities.
Stand Up! Chicago says, “We will continue to work with coalition partners and working Chicago families to reclaim even more of our money from the CME and other corporate welfare kings – so that it can be used to create and retain jobs and save our schools and communities.”
“We’re committed to defending Chicago families against the wealthy banks and corporations that have taken our tax dollars through tax breaks, bailouts, and corporate welfare payments. By reclaiming these funds for meaningful job creation and investment in strong schools and communities, we can secure a brighter future for Chicago’s working families.”
We have power in our workplaces, in our communities, in our nations. This Quality Public Services - Action Now! campaign unites people from all walks of life, private and public sector trade unions, municipal governments and civil society groups in advancing public services as the best way to build peaceful, just, equitable, democratic and sustainable societies.
